Local Jewelry StoresFounded in 1963, Select Jewelers was the American Dream of founder Joe Mortimer.

Joe Mortimer was born to Isabel and Joseph Mortimer Sr.  in 1930. Joe was a usual boy from a blue collar family.  He had two sisters, attended school, played stick ball, and labored to help his parents support the family.  After graduation, Joe was drafted into the armed forces.

After serving in the US Army for two years, Joe Mortimer went to work in the tool and die industry.  Though thriving at the time, the industry left Joe dissatisfied. Reacting on a whim and the dream of having his own business, Joe began to sell jewelry as a secondary source of income. Watches displayed on his wrist, and jewelry shown from his pocket, Joe sold pieces of gold and silver to friends and friends of friends.

A short time later, under the tutorial ship of a mentor who owned a jewelry store in downtown Philadelphia, Joe opened the first retail location in 1963. Selling costume jewelry and knickknacks from his Bustleton Pike store in Feasterville, Pennsylvania while still working in the machine shop industry, Joe found the American dream.

Outgrowing this location, a move to the Somerton Shopping Center afforded Select Jewelers  more space and upgraded inventory.  In 1964, Select Jewelers expanded their retail offerings with a line of fine gold, quality watches, and their first line of engagement rings.

In 1968, Joe took advantage of the opportunity to move Select Jewelers back to the suburbs.  They moved to a very small 400 sq. ft. store near the entrance of the “Old Bucks County Mall.”  In 1976, another move to a 1500 sq. ft. store across the mall yielded twice the space.  By 1979, with the increasing popularity of the Mall, which featured stores like McCrorys 5 and 10, Buster Brown, and A and P food market, the Mortimer’s hometown jewelry store was a hit. Joe Mortimer moved his store once again to a prime 7000sq ft. location within the mall, where they featured a showroom, full shop and casting (jewelry manufacturing) facility.  Select would call this location home for 21 years.

In July of 2010, Joe Mortimer made the difficult decision to move his store to 262 E Street Road in Feasterville.  Joe Mortimer died on July 1st 2011. He was 80 years old.
